Google の URL短縮サービス Goo.gl は、2009年12月のサービス開始以来、Googleツールバー や FeedBurner からの利用など一部のサービスでの連携に限られてきたのですが、ついに通常の利用も可能となりました。
Google URL Shortener Gets a Website
We first introduced the Google URL Shortener (goo.gl) last December as part of Google Toolbar and Feedburner. Since our initial release, we’ve integrated the technology into many other Google products including News, Blogger, Maps, Picasa Web Albums, and Moderator, but people have been asking for a direct way to use the service. Today we’re giving goo.gl its own website (http://goo.gl/, of course!). We don’t intend to overload goo.gl with features, but we do want it to be the stablest, most secure, and fastest URL shortener on the web.
マルウェアやフィッシング、スパムなどの対応も備えられているそうですので安心して利用できそうですね。
McAfee や Twitter など URL短縮サービス が増えてきましたね。でも、結局 のところ bit.ly が定番となりそうな雰囲気ありますね。。。
Google が JPEG や GIF などの既存の画像フォーマットの画質を損なわずにファイルサイズを圧縮することのできる独自フォーマット WebP を開発者向けに公開しました。WebP は、同社の動画コーデック V8 をベースにした画像圧縮技術で、JPEG 画像などを平均 39% も圧縮できたそうです。
WebP, a new image format for the Web
As part of Google’s initiative to make the web faster, over the past few months we have released a number of tools to help site owners speed up their websites. We launched the Page Speed Firefox extension to evaluate the performance of web pages and to get suggestions on how to improve them, we introduced the Speed Tracer Chrome extension to help identify and fix performance problems in web applications, and we released a set of closure tools to help build rich web applications with fully optimized JavaScript code. While these tools have been incredibly successful in helping developers optimize their sites, as we’ve evaluated our progress, we continue to notice a single component of web pages is consistently responsible for the majority of the latency on pages across the web: images.

実際にはブラウザが WebP フォーマットには対応していないので、JPEG と PNG で表示されていますが、JPEG 画像が WebP にすると、どれくらい圧縮できているのかが数値で表示されています。
JPEG や GIF といった画像フォーマットは、レガシーもいいところではあるんだけど、いまだにデファクトなのは汎用性があるから。この WebP が、デジカメなどをはじめ、画像を取り扱う機器にまで対応していくなら、ネットの世界でもデファクトになるでしょうね。
でも、JPEG 2000 や JPEG XR がそうであるように普及の兆しすらないフォーマットはたくさんあるわけで、WebP がそういったものと同じ運命をたどる可能性の方が高い。ぜひ、逆らって勝ち上がって欲しいものです。
とりあえず、次期 Google Chrome は対応するそうです。
